 TEACHER OF THE MONTH – NOVEMBER

Jessica Lukatchik, First Grade at Good Shepherd Academy

Ever since I was a young girl, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. My elementary teachers fueled my love for learning by making learning fun and always encouraging me along the way. These special people made an impact in my life and influenced me to want to do the same. I pursued my teaching career at King’s College and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Education. While subbing at local school districts, I decided to further my education and received my Master’s Degree in Reading from King’s College in 2012. Shortly after, I was hired full-time at Good Shepherd Academy where I currently teach first grade.

One of my priorities as a teacher is getting to know my students and build a relationship with them early on. I love getting to know my students’ extracurricular activities and share conversations about practices, sports, and some of their favorite things. Once those relationships are built, something as simple as asking how their new puppy is doing automatically helps the students feel loved and cared about. They are more willing to put the extra effort into school work and become more engaged for this reason.
My favorite subject area to teach is Language Arts. Helping students build their foundational reading skills and grow to be fluent readers is an incredible process to be involved in. It is very fulfilling as an educator to watch students progress and see their confidence levels rise with their reading skills.
I am so grateful to have a job where I get to dance, sing, and be silly all while making a difference in children’s lives. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the amazing school community I’m part of at GSA. The administration, faculty, and staff along with our supportive families are always striving to prepare our students to be faith-filled leaders and life-long learners. Go Guardians!
